The Texas onion market is now in full swing and we are not seeing the demand necessary to maintain higher prices. It appears that both Texas and California have large size onions since the Supers, Colossals, and Jumbos are almost all the same price. Freight rates in Texas are climbing mostly because of heavy demand on watermelons for the Mother’s Day weekend. That should calm by early next week.
We have finish Norkota’s in Idaho so Wisconsin and Washington are the only place that still have them. Kern County won’t start russets for about three to four weeks but as we posted last Friday, they are down 66% in acreage. We don’t expect them to be much of a factor on the summer deal execpt in the far west. Look for the market to continue to inch upward because of lower packouts in the Idaho Burbank’s but we don’t expect to see run away prices.
