As we move into the summer season, we are starting to see that we may not have as many potatoes as we thought. It appears that between a hard push by the fresh shippers early in the season and processor activity, we are a bit shorter of supplies than we thought. Also, as mentioned in previous letters, the quality of the Burbank crop leaves a lot to be desired. While the finished product is good, the cullage is heavier than normal reducing the packouts dramatically.
We expect there to be supplies through July on old crop but there may be a small gap between old and new. A bit early to tell. We need warmer weather to get the new crop moving along. At the present time most shippers are thinking about mid-August for start up. The weather could change that one way or the other.
