The week closed with potatoes having a stronger feeling all sizes of cartons, consumers, and U.S.#2’s. We expect all potatoes to be higher priced next week. We know they will be at least 50 cents higher and maybe even a dollar. Quality remains one of the biggest challenges but most shippers are doing a first rate job with the product they have to work with. That said, they aren’t getting that much done and the slower production and lower pack outs leads to less finished product. Book early to insure price and arrival.
Onions closced the week at about steady. Some areas were a bit softer FOB’s but that was as much a transportation issue as it was anything. It is hard to properly service a customer if you can’t get adquate transportation. What this creates is a situtation that shippers must meet a certain delivered price and have to lower their FOB’s to offset the higher freight rates. It truly is a challenge and we don’t see it geting a lot better in the near future.
