The temperatures are climbing and it appears that we are in for about a week of above normal temperatures. Hopefully, it will not be as hot as they forecast. Every production area in the west will be hit with these hot temperatures. It is not good for onions being harvested in New Mexico or California and it’s not healthy for growing plants. We won’t know what kind of effect this will have on crops for a while but normally these kind of temperatures are not good if they last over a long period.
Both Potato and Onion markets are steady. The hot weather may create a sense of urgerncy with some shippers but generally we don’t expect to see any panic. Next week, 4th of July, we expect onions to be packed but some potato shipper will take the 5th off and some will work. It is all based on the amount of potatoes they have left. Most would like to pack till at least the 10th of August if possible. New crop Norkota’s are expected to start about August 15th at this time.
