The potato market remains active in Idaho due to lack of supplies from other areas. Cartons increased in price this week but consumers and 2’s remained steady. We expect the prices to start to stabilize as new crop gets closer. New crop Washington Norkota’s will start next week and new crop Idaho Norkota’s will start around August 15th. Washington should be in full volume the first week of August and Idaho will be in full volume about September 1st. The crops look good at this time and we are hopeful that our hot weather is not causing any stress issues but we won’t really know until we begin harvest.
The onion market is steady because of the rain showers in New Mexico. We are concerned that we might have extra heavy volume if it ever dries our in New Mexico. There are still a fair amount of onions left to harvest. California has been able to capalize on this and have moved heavy volume. We will have transplants out of Washington state next week and new crop Idaho/Oregon’s about August 10th. By mid-August we will have several areas packing onions and unless demand picks up, we could have some market adjustment. That said, the crop looks very nice and should harvest nice quality crop.
