UPDATE-7/26/13

UPDATE-7/26/13

POTATOES:  Idaho is about to being the ending run on old crop.  Most shippers indicate they will end old crop somewhere between the 15th and 20th of August.  Since our Burbank crop hasn’t been the best, it may be a welcome relief.  We expect to see new crop start the week of the 12th of August.  It will start a bit slow this year but by the week of the 26th we should have 90% of the Norkota packers up and running.  Washington state is just getting started.  About three packers are trying to start but most will start next week.  Expect full volume about the 5th of  August.  The early digs look good and we expect to see a nice crop in Washington.

ONIONS: Rain again in New Mexico.  This has slowed the production and also delayed the packing.  Some shippers that would normally finish this week or first part of next will go into the week of August 12th.  If the temperatures don’t get to high we should be ok with the quality.  California is really tight because of the New Mexico situation.  Their market has firmed and we expect it to do so for another week or so based on the New Mexico situation.  Washington is in the process of finishing winter over onions and will start transplants next week.  Direct seed (storage type onions) will start about August 10th.  New crop Idaho/Oregon onions will start about the week of August 12th.  So far the storage onion crop looks good but we have a long way to go before harvest is complete.  We will keep you updated.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND AND DON’T FORGET TO MAKE GARNAND MARKETING YOU FIRST CALL!!!
