Well, it is the end of July and we are just getting started on new crop. We have almost completed the winter over onions from Washington and are just starting into the transplants. We will have direct seeded by the 15th of August. Washington new crop Norkota’s are just getting started and the market is trying to find its trading level. More shippers will start this week and even more next week. We should have everyone packing by the 19th of August.
Idaho is just about to start on new crop potatoes and onions. We expect both to be starting sometime the week of August 12th and increasing in volume as we go through the month. Both potatoes and onions seem to be handling the heat well and we expect good crops. Idaho/Oregon onions acreage is about the same as last year but Idaho potatoes are down about 8% due to high corn, wheat, and hay prices. Nationally we are down about 6% on potatoes. That would indicate a good potato market. Time will tell.
