First, Potatoes are steady. Some shippers are slowing down to allow the market to stabilize. This is keeping the market steady. We expect this to continue through the next two weeks or until the demand starts to pick up.
The onion market is anything but steady. There are so many rumors and different opinions it is almost impossible to know what is going on. Here is what we understand: Idaho/Oregon will have most shippers packing for one more week and then at least 8 will be shut down. Washington is moving through its crop faster than normal partly due to extra demand and partly because of extra shrink. Mexican onions, by some accounts, are 60% finished and are over 1800 loads behind last year. There are so many rumors about Mexico that it is difficult to know what is true. New crop Texas is running late and will start in a light way about mid-April. New crop California start about April 20th and then move forward throughout the summer. The drought in California is really taking a toll and we are expecting lighter yields unless they have significant rain. Hang on, it’s going to get exciting!
