The weather could be the big story this next week. By the weekend we are to be around 100 degrees in the potato areas and 105 in the onion areas. It is to last about a week. This is very tough on crops and we worry about both potatoes and onions. New Mexico is forcast to be over 105 for several days and this doesn’t bode well for new crop onions. Normally if you can stay at 100 degrees or below there is little or no damage to the crop. That is true for both potatoes and onions but if it gets hotter than 100 for a long period of time we could see some issues.
Both potatoes and onions are growing well but this kind of weather really is hard on them. They stop growing the potaotes or onions and just try to keep the tops alive. This start and stop approach sometimes makes is difficult to have good quality. Hopefully this weather will not be as hot as forecast and have a much shorter time period.
