The potato market in Idaho continues to be very strong. Prices went up this week and we expect some higher prices next week as well. Consumers took the biggest jump but carton demand is heavy as well. Washington will start new crop very lightly next week and heavier volume on the 29th. That might relieve some of the pressure but those that still need Idaho’s will have this battle till mid to latter August. New crop Idaho potatoes look very good and we should have a good quality crop if the weather will permit.
Onions have remained steady because of the rains in New Mexico. Scattered showers are forecast for the entire weekend. If the rain would quit the onions could dry out and we might see some changes. So far the temperatures haven’t been real hot so that is working in our favor. California is brisk because it is difficult to get product from New Mexico. Washington is running new crop but it is mostly winter-over onions and their shelf life isn’t always the best. They will be in transplants in about 10 days and direct seed in about three weeks. Idaho/Oregon’s crop looks very good and we expect to see it start just a bit early. Maybe about the 15th of August. Early projections are for the crop to be heavy to jumbo yellow’s with some colossal and fewer Super colossal. Few Whites than last year but Red’s should be about the same.
